Meet Shandi Kay

I remember my first photography class - back in the days of film and developer. I was in the 10th grade and my teacher was a jolly man who spoke of photography as though it was something magical. The first classes were tedious - bringing in objects from home to explore the ideas of exposure, composition, and depth of field… It wasn’t until the day I learned to develop my own film and turn negatives into prints that I understood the magic myself.

Much has changed since then, with the addition of digital cameras and photoshop we are able to create all that we can imagine in an image. While I sometimes miss the film days, I have learned to push the boundaries of what is possible with my camera, my lighting, and my editing to create images I never dreamed possible in those early days. For me being a photographer isn’t just a profession, it is something engrained deep inside of me. I want to capture images not just because they are beautiful, but so they can be shared with others.

Over the years I have worked in different aspects of the photography industry, but my greatest love is photographing people. To walk into a clients home and see the images I have taken hanging on their walls, knowing that those images will tell their story for years to come, brings me the greatest joy. Every photoshoot is different, because everyone’s story is different. Getting to know my clients and telling their stories is what gets me up in the mornings (and often keeps me working late into the nights).

On the days I put my camera down, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and cuddling with my puppies. I am a Rocky Mountain girl at heart, even though I live by the ocean. I will always choose coffee over tea, and vanilla ice cream over chocolate. Most importantly, It is my faith and trust in God that has gotten me through more storms than I can even count, without Jesus nothing else matters.
